Everyone has their opinions on women on the football team. They range from proud prideful support to sexist oppressing comments. When you are told you can not do something, it is scientifically proven that you will want to do that even more. As we move towards a more progressive society, female football players are coming out the shadows. Here at Hillgrove, we have had two female football players in the last four years. I’m sure our students and teachers here had a few thoughts and opinions on this so, I took it upon myself to open that can of worms by asking all the right questions.
Starting by diving into what it means to go against the grain and defy social norms. “I think it’s important that we have the opportunity to join what some might consider an only male sport. It sends a message to the world that it’s time to be more inclusive and open about one gender joining a sport that is mainly dominated by the opposite gender.” Kaylee Owens, sophomore and current female football player at Hillgrove. Can it start a lot of controversy? Yes, but controversy is what we need. A conversation needs to be started in order to incite change.
With that being said, there are definitely some differing opinions. “I believe in inclusivity and everything, but I also believe that some sports can’t mix both genders. What if we’re too rough and we hurt a girl player. You don’t want to have to think about that kind of stuff in the middle of a game.” A football player, who asked not to be named.
At the end of the day how one person might feel will not always be the same as your opinion. It’s important to acknowledge everyone has the right to believe what they want, but if they go about using it the wrong way that’s when it becomes a problem. “No matter what your opinion is on girls playing football you should never use hate speech and hurtful behavior to spread your message.” Elizabeth Guendulain, a senior here at hillgrove.
