Young Rock is an NBC show but can also be found on Hulu and was released on February 16th of 2021. Each episode is released on Tuesday’s around 8pm for a total of 11 episodes. This show gives the inside scoop of how Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson grew up and the life lessons he was taught along the way. This series was created by Nahnatchka Khan and Jeff Chiang.
People mainly know Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson from wrestling and movies such as San Andreas, The Game Plan, Tooth Fairy, Jumanji and Fast and Furious, but no one really knows his full life story. The show Young Rock is based in 2032. There is a presidential race taking place. In each episode, there is an interview or simple conflict that takes place, and in each interview, a great question is asked and the only way for the answer to be logical is for Dwayne to share a life story that can relate or shows how he can connect to the topic. The show has three different points of views. “Adrian Groulx plays the ten-year-old Johnson, Bradley Constant plays the future Black Adam at 15, and Uli Latukefu plays the Rock between the ages of 18 and 20,” Los Angeles Times states. The show, in a way, is a remembrance for Dwayne's father, who passed away in January of 2020. It shares all the good times they had together, yet this show leaves viewers wondering if Dwayne is really planning to run for president or if it is just part of the show’s plot.
In the first episode, people see how Dwayne’ family functioned with his father being a wrestler. As young Dwayne and his father drive home, Dwayne asks why they have such a nice car if they live in a hotel. His father then responds, “it’s a part of the gimmick.” When watching this show, it is important to know exactly what the gimmick is and how it works. It is later told that the reason they have a nice car is so people think they are wealthy. Throughout the 11 episode viewers see how often the gimmick is really used, from Dwayne trying to get a girlfriend in high school to him fitting in at college.
This show is truly great. It is at 89% on Rotten Tomato and has been overall reviewed as a 4.4 out of 5 from fans. Fans are already looking forward to another season and for more information about if the Rock is really going to run for president.
