Nasa and the Asteroid Bennu By:Ximena Arreguin
Nasa is always surprising us with new things everyday, whether it is the discovery of something new on another planet or telling us how the moon would look like on certain dates, but recently, Nasa has announced the release of never before seen pictures of OSIRIS-REx that after two years of circling the asteroid “BENNU”, they will finally try to descend on its rocks and debris. On October 20th 2020, the highly anticipated pictures of the asteroid-study space missions were released causing a lot of new impacts for our world. The pictures are taken 200 million miles away from earth.
At 6:08 EDT earth was given the notice of the occurrence, however, data shows that it only touched the surface for six seconds before the spacecraft backed up again. “I find it very incredible how Nasa can do all of this, honestly to me it seems impossible to find out what's going on out there, but apparently a good team is all you need,” expressed 20 year old Janie Arreguin as she found out about everything going on in space right now. Bennus landing is one of Nasa’s most recent impacting news stories that has been released, along with the pictures that can impact us in the future in a lot of different ways.
It has been predicted that the Asteroid could strike on earth November 2nd, a day before the United States elections. “I wonder if the landing of the asteroid might have an effect on the elections, things like no power for example,” states Gabriela Espinoza since she is very into Politics. Aside from that, Nasa also found out that some parts of an asteroid named Veta have been spotted in Bennu. That is not the only thing that has been spotted on the asteroid, things like carbon-bearing materials have also been discovered here.
Just like that, the world keeps surprising us with interesting things, things that we do not particularly see or hear about often but are for sure interesting. The reason why the Orisis-REx was directed to go to Bennu was so that it could collect at least 2 ounces on if the surface material, “Bennnu continues to surprise us with great science and also throwing some curveballs” said Thomas Zurbuche, Nasa’s associate administrator for science. Considering Nasa continues to surprise us, all we can do is wait for another shocking set of news.
