On March 14th, 2018, tragedy struck as the world lost one of its great intellectual icons. That icon was Stephen Hawking, who was confirmed to have passed away at the age of 76. In his long-lasting life, Hawking had become a world-renowned physicist and an icon in the arts of math and science. Because of his fame, many people have since taken to the web to give their condolences and thoughts to the family of Stephen Hawking, and mourn his loss as well.
Hawking’s children, Lucy, Robert, and Tim stated, “He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humor inspired people across the world. He once said: 'It would not be much of a universe if it wasn't home to the people you love.' We will miss him forever” (taken from reuters.com). Eddie Redmayne, the actor who portrayed him in The Theory of Everything also said, “We have lost a truly beautiful mind, an astonishing scientist and the funniest man I have ever had the pleasure to meet. My love and thoughts are with his extraordinary family” (taken from reuters.com). Even Hillgrove teacher Ms.Mitchel said, “I think it's a major loss for the science community.” Many other actors, physicists, and even politicians have since extended their condolences as well, and it is clear that Mr.Hawking’s passing will be mourned in the weeks to come.
Diagnosed with ALS at the age of 22, Stephen Hawking had a very rough life due to him being severely handicapped in a wheelchair and only being able to speak with the help of a voice box. However, he soon rose to become a revolutionary cosmologist, astronomer, mathematician, and author of many different books, including the best-selling “A Brief History of Time”. His work earned him recognition from all around the world, and even guest appearances on shows such as “The Simpsons”, “The Big Bang Theory”, and “Star Trek: The Next Generation”. Overall, Stephen Hawking was a brilliant human being and an excellent role-model to people with disabilities who still have the potential to make a difference. May Mr.Hawking’s memory live on in the minds of many, and may he also continue to be the genius he was in the stars.
