The years largest and most anticipated sporting event, the Women's World Cup, has once again captured the hearts of millions worldwide, with the surprising run of Jamacia, the win of Spain and the controversy around it, and the disappointing performance from the U.S.
According to FIFA, the largest governing body for international soccer, the US women’s soccer team was number 1 in the rankings for many years as they had consistently proved their mastery of the beautiful game in world cups in the past. But after their disastrous run in this year’s world cup in which they dropped out in the first round of knock outs, the opinion of them has greatly lowered. “I feel like it just shows the lack of coaching in the program,” varsity soccer player and senior Trinity expresses on the state of the team, “you can’t do the same thing and expect something different.” She thought that the core of the players was far too old and that they were sticking to tactics that teams have adapted to.
One of the most surprising performances of the tournament was undoubtably the Jamacia women’s national team. In the last world cup, according to the “Olympics”, Jamacia had failed to win or tie a single game while conceding 12 goals in only 3 matches. This year, they shocked the world by reaching it to the knockout rounds and proving their small program as a big competitor.
This year, Spain etched their name in the annals of soccer history by winning this year’s Women’s World Cup in the first time in their nation’s history. “They showed some pretty good teamwork and they played with a lot of hustle,” a comment from girls soccer coach, Coach Center. Despite the great victory for Spain, during the victory celebration, Spanish soccer chief Luis Rubiales kissed one of the Spanish players in an incredibly inappropriate gesture. Despite this, he has yet to be fired, which has left a poor taste in the mouths of many viewers after an otherwise successful women’s world cup.
