Fate: The Winx Saga was released January 22, 2021 on Netflix, and it has a total of six episodes. The show is a fantasy teen drama that was originally based on the animated series Winx Club that was aired on Nickelodeon. Fairies attend a boarding school in another world where they learn to master their powers while learning to navigate through friendships, love, and monsters.
There is only one season for now, but there has been plans for a season two in the near future. The reviews for the show are very mixed. Some people claim that the remake does not give the original show the recognition it deserves. On the other hand, there are also others saying that the adaptation from the original is great, and the changes from the original makes a great backstory for each of the characters. Many of the reviews that are less than good are mostly explaining how the original and the remake differ too much. Fans have countered that argument, saying the remake is meant for teens and young adults so the adaptation obviously would have been different. Ashlin Shih, a previous fan of Winx Club, gave her opinion on the remake. She explained, “The remake was good, but it was pretty different compared to the original. Some of the characters like Techna and Timmy weren't even in the show at all.” She added, “I mean I liked it the plot was really good and there was a lot of cliff hangers which made it much more interesting I just wish it was more like the original.”
The remake also sparked a lot of hate due to the fact that Musa, who was based on Lucy Liu, was not adapted to be Asian and same with Flora, who was supposed to be Latina. Another aspect of the show that was very different was that the remake is much darker and introduces more adult content, such as smoking, drinking, and cursing. Brooklyn Waters, who watched the first season, explained how she felt about the show: “I don’t think you can compare the two shows because they both give off a different vibe. The original was meant more for younger girls while this one is meant for older audiences due to the more adult language and actions.”
Overall, the reviews were good enough for Netflix to produce a second season. Many fans of the show are excited and many have said that there is major potential for the show.
