On Thursday, September 5, 2019, the JV Football team for Hillgrove High School went against Wheeler High School. This was the JV team’s second game of the season as well as their second home game. The boys were in the lead the whole time, and won the game with a final score of 35-12.
Going into the second game of the season students and supporters alike had confidence that the JV team would bring home a win against Wheeler. “I guess, Wheeler.. Honestly it wasn’t much of a challenge. I’m gonna be real, it wasn’t much of a challenge,” Tajh Reese, a JV and Varsity football player at Hillgrove High School, stated. Journee Martin, a JV cheerleader at Hillgrove, also believed that the JV team would have an easy win. “Where’s the cheerleaders? And why is the team so small?” Journee questioned. The game went by as they predicted. The Hillgrove JV team won without any problems, and the cheerleaders did not have anyone to cheer against.
After the first win of the season there are many emotions after a game for players, cheerleaders, and other supporters. “Oh, I was tired. Um, I was very tired, Um but I was excited for them I thought that they played a great game [and] um they did a wonderful job um of of of bringing home the W. It was- it was awesome um, so I wa- I was really excited for them. Can’t wait to see tomorrow's game, pretty excited about that.” Melissa Garrido, a mother of a JV cheerleader, said. Reese explained, “Oh, I was happy even though they weren’t as good as us coming out with a W was relaxing.” The cheerleaders were also very happy: “I was happy because we won and we were in the lead the whole time.” Martin exclaimed.
Although the JV team won the game against Wheeler with a breeze, there is always still room for improvement for the football team, as well as the cheerleaders and the supporters. “Be loud.” Reese states. “Yes, [the cheerleaders] being loud makes us hype.” he states. Though they do good hyping up the football team, the cheerleaders are working to be better. “Like us? Umm well today we have practice so we’re gonna go over our cheers and stunts so we can get them right at the game on Thursday.” Martin explains how they will prepare for the next game. “Umm, I think just knowing the cheers. Some of us are still new so we don't know some of the cheers, so I think we need to work on that and just staying in line, cause we get out of line a lot. So we need to look like cheerleaders.” Martin says what her team could improve on. Garrido gives her take on what the JV football team could improve on. “Umm, with any sport, any team sport, I think there’s always room for improvement. Umm just- I don't know very, very much about football, but from what I do know, umm obviously every team has to find umm that connection... I think, ya know, of course they’re gonna, you know, look as if they have a small connection, but they need to work on that. Um defensive line could probably use a little work um, but um overall I think that they have a good team… I think as the season progresses I think that their connection and their teamwork is gonna progress as well.” As the season progresses, hopefully the JV team improves and becomes a stronger team to keep up with the wins!
