All songs have a message just like books; you can always find the theme. The generations before our time had music that had meaning, and to share experiences, or trauma that artists have been through in life. Now music has taken a drastic turn now. All rappers just mention is: drugs, money, a woman’s butt, and gangs, but there are rappers who still care, for instance, Joyner Lucas. Joyner has talked about many topics that have been frequently happening in our society. For example, police brutality, disorders like ADHD, suicide, etc.
Joyner has made a lot of music that has been connected to our society and how we treat each other. The lyrics from Joyner’s song he entitled I’m Not Racist understands how we as a society express our point of view. “I feel that there’s a disconnect between your culture and mine.” Camile Blackwell a Hillgrove student said, “I think he meant that the white race doesn’t really understand our race as much as they could or should.” Another student by the name of Yancey Stroy at Hillgrove High School had a different interpretation of what the song untold. “The whole message is behind how we say we’re equal but in a lot of hidden ways there is still a lot of work that needs to be done where we can do more and be better towards in others because we are all created equal.” Both students share their points on how there is a disconnect between our culture and how society needs to attend to fix it.
One thing that Joyner has changed about our generation is that he inspired many people through his music, as an American black rapper he has become a musical icon that we can all look up to. For example, Joyner has inspired Stroy, who that if Joyner can be described as one thing it would be, “Misunderstood”. Another Hillgrove High School student by the name of Malik Henderson described Joyner as, “A genius.” Stroy also commented on how Joyner inspired him in his life, “Joyner has inspired me to keep my head up straight and be aware of the problems we have in our society and there needs to be a change into the right direction.”
Another thing that Joyner has changed about our generation, is how we have been more open-minded. Blackwell commented that Joyner has also influenced the way we think, “Yes, because I can see how our generation isn’t as socially aware as it was when our parents were our age.” Joyner has also separated himself into his own variety of rapping and taking a step back from the drugs, gangs, and exploiting women for their body parts. In Joyner’s song Broke and Stupid, he talked about the disorder ADHD but he also commented other rappers and how they sound, “This is a Talladega night, I think I’m Rick Bobby, my advice: quit the music, all you n****s sound the same just a different copy.” Henderson commented by saying, “He’s saying that these new rappers have no creativity and uniqueness to their voice. Especially mumble rappers.” Henderson also mentioned other rappers that really do not have anything to say and that is what really separates them from Joyner, “Joyner’s songs have a deep meaning to it. Every word in his songs makes you want to think. 6ix9ine just makes music to talk about gang banging, murder bloods, and drugs.”
Joyner has influenced many people by showing them that music is not something that we can just grab onto and pray that everything works out, but we actually have to connect and fight for our own. Nothing is what it seems but the way we see and treat each other is crystal clear.
