It is the winter of 2018, which means that the Winter Olympics has arrived. It is a time where countries from all around the world join together to compete for a medal, preferably gold. This year’s Winter Olympics has taken place in Pyeongchang, South Korea. All of the winter olympic sports being shown this year are the biathlon, bobsled, skiing, curling, figure skating, ice hockey, speed skating, luge, snowboarding, and skeleton. The Olympics are a chance for the world to gloat at each other and name a champion once and for all. However, the olympics also mean so much more to many people.
A group of people are chosen to represent their whole country. Spectators from around the world gather in one place to watch the olympic games go down. No matter what background or history you come from, we can all come together to enjoy the Winter Olympics. So far, the United States has earned four gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal. Two of those gold medals were earned by 17 year olds. With such young olympians bringing home the gold I decided to hear from some other young voices, the students of Hillgrove High School.
A junior at Hillgrove, Miles Dickerson, said, “I think [the Olympics] are pretty powerful. Everyone gets to represent their country”.
Dickerson also commented on if he would want to participate in the olympics: “No, I actually think about what it would be like to be a spectator. I think it would just be cool to travel somewhere for ten days and just watch [the olympics]”. Dickerson’s opinion is an unpopular one, but shows how on either perspective of the olympics they bring excitement and unity.
A Hillgrove Track member, Mycherie Onuzuruike, told me who her favorite olympian was and her goals of being an olympian: “My favorite olympian [is] Phylicia George. She runs hurdles in the olympics for Canada. She’s also doing bobsledding this year. Yes [I want to be an olympian]. I want to do long jump and triple jump”. With Onuzuruike’s big dreams and background of breaking Hillgrove’s long jump record we might be seeing her on the pedestal sooner or later.
Ethan Millett, another Hillgrove student, shared his opinion on why this year’s Winter Olympics are so inspiring: “Yea [they do inspire me]. The fact that they’re in there at that age amazes me”.
The Winter Olympics bring and have brought millions of viewers from countries located all over the world. It allows anyone from anywhere to step up on the pedestal and win gold for their country. Will you be the next olympian?
