Violet Evergarden is a beautiful soldier without a purpose (also known as “the weapon”). To find her purpose, she gets a job at a postal company. To understand what love is, she embarks on a journey as an auto memory doll. “I will run as fast as I can to wherever my customer desires. I am the Auto Memories Doll, Violet Evergarden.”
Violet Evergarden is a thirteen episode Japanese animated series by Kyoto Animation. Kyoto Animation has also created K-On! and Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid. Much like the other animations by Kyoto Animation, Violet Evergarden is beautifully animated. Each character in Violet Evergarden is unique in their own special and personal way.
Violet Evergarden is a breathtaking story full of emotions, but not only are the characters are just breathtaking, the whole scenery and environment is just as beautiful. Each scene has a unique appearance. From the water to the trees, the background is truly magnificent.
This show is not just an average anime with cute and obnoxious scenes. The soundtrack and story combined is heart throbbing. One review on myanimelist.com said, “Every time I watch an episode, the first thing that comes to mind is “hard to watch, but in the best way.” As a disclaimer, I am not in any way an emotional person, I am blunt and prefer fact to fiction. I do like people who think with their emotions, but something about this show gets to me.”
Being that Violet Evergarden is on Netflix, the English voiceover is available. Though the story is better off being watched with the Japanese audio and English subtitles. Watching the first voice acted version shows all of the true and original emotions that the English voice actors will try and copy. Emotions are sometimes lost when the story is not told by the original voices.
Violet Evergarden is not just a show. It is actually based off of a light novel written by Kana Akatsuki and illustrated by Akiko Takase. There are two volumes of the novel, but it sadly has not been published in English yet. Though it is not published in English, it can be purchased from KyoAni’s website in Japanese.
“I’ve seen the first episode of Violet Evergarden, and was absolutely blown away by the music, and especially the animation, and I can’t wait for the show’s story to continue.”, said a review on Reddit. Even if you are not sure about the show, maybe watching one episode will change your mind. It may even get you into more shows like Violet Evergarden. Go check it out on Netflix today!
