The recently released trailer for Sony’s Venom has garnered mostly disappointment and disdain from fans of the popular Marvel character (myself included), who were already on the fence about this project from the beginning. In 2016, Sony announced their plan to bring the iconic Spider-Man adversary Venom to the big screen in his own film. While Venom was due for a proper on-screen treatment after the disastrous results of Spider-Man 3, the decision was met with both confusion and annoyance due to the fact that the film would take place outside of the MCU, where Spider-Man had recently been introduced into. Even Hillgrove student Kim Dor expressed displeasure when asked about the prospect and said “Haha….without Spider-Man, are you insane?”. When the trailer was finally released, it only added gasoline to the fires of many, especially mine.
Venom’s first trailer was terrible for its lack of content having to actually do with the Venom character. Instead of showing any of the sci-fi/superhero elements that make a comic book movie, the trailer instead only showed a bunch of random scenes that look like they belong more in a Bourne film than a film based on a Marvel character. Internet podcast host Jordan Samuel put it best when he said “Fans want the studio to embrace Venom with crazy villains and grotesque violence. Instead, we got brooding dialogue and separate action which seems at odds with the character's beginnings” (taken from comicconverse.com). To add insult to injury, fans did not even get their first look at the titular character, only a glimpse at the symbiote substance giving him his powers. Though the film is still more than five months away, and could prove the consensus wrong, things are not looking good for Venom so far.
Venom is a longtime character in Marvel Comics, and is frequently associated with Spider-Man and his rogues gallery. Making his first full appearance in 1988, Venom (AKA Eddie Brock) was an instant hit with fans, and has become a mainstay in the Marvel universe, appearing in multiple shows and making his big screen debut in Spider-Man 3. While the film was poor in many aspects, the casting and performance of Topher Grace as Venom drew an amount of criticism that wouldn't be toppled until the casting and performance of Jessie Eisenberg as Lex Luthor in BVS. Now played by Tom Hardy, Venom will have another chance to be adapted right when his movie is released in October of this year.
