The genius behind the Oscar winning thriller, Get Out, has yet again succeeded in leaving audiences to curiously reflect. Jordan Peele’s groundbreaking new horror film, Us, was released on March 22nd, 2019, domestically grossing $70.2 million in just three days. Not only has Jordan Peele been praised for casting all black leads in a horror movie, a genre that always consist of many whites, but he also made it a point to shine a light on societal issues again. Nearing $175 million worldwide (box office), Us has now become the most successful horror film in American history. The 94% Rotten Tomatoes movie has critics raging and people talking, with some confused and others amazed.
When asked why she thought Us ended up being the most successful horror film in American history, Hillgrove junior, Chase Wilson, said, “His last movie was such a success so now he has a big following, his movies also have good storylines.” Hillgrove junior, Shemiah Marshall, thinks it is “because it has a really great plot and lots of twists and turns throughout the movie.” Raegan Keana-Dawes, a junior at Pope, insisted that, “It’s different than most movies, especially horror movies as the main cast and had white people die first, which is usually the opposite of what happens.”
Chase claimed that the reason for her going to see Us was because she “went to go see his last movie.” Shemiah simply stated, “The trailer and sneak peak scenes caught my eye.” Raegan stated, “I texted my friend and said we have to go see it together and she texted me back and said her and her mom were going to see it that night and so I went.”
The valuable thing that Chase said she learned from the movie was, “the underlying issues with class structure.” Shemiah admitted, “I learned that nothing is always as it seems (never stay close minded).” Raegan simply stated, “Don’t take things for granted.”
Jordan Peele never disappoints, raising the suspicions for another oscar nominated piece of work. Never failing to address current social issues while providing a platform for the black community to prosper, with Peele recently saying things such as, “I’ll never cast any whites as lead roles in my movies. I’ve already seen that.”, and, “I wanted black people to be the first audiences to watch Us…” As of now, Us continues to make history, with lots of viewings each week.
