Three UCLA basketball players were arrested in China when they tried shoplifting designer sunglasses. President Trump had to intervene with the Chinese government to release the players. They have suspended from the team indefinitely.
When the coach was interviewed he said, “They will have to earn their way back.” The three players, LiAngelo Ball, Jalen Hill, and Cody Riley, all returned Tuesday night. LiAngelo Ball, the highest-profile player of the three, said “I’d like to start off by saying sorry for stealing from the stores in China.” LiAngelo also thanked President Trump for intervening with the Chinese government to release them. Riley also thanked President Trump after he tweeted, “Do you think the three UCLA players will say ‘thank you President Trump?’ They were headed to 10 years in prison!.”
The players were accused of stealing from a Louis Vuitton store in Hangzhou. They were arrested on November 8th before their game against Georgia Tech. The players were detained in their hotel while their teammates headed home and were released on Tuesday for a flight home to California. I asked Josh Arnold about the players and he said, “they are super lucky to be let go because of the high conviction rate in China.”
LiAngelo Ball is part of the Ball family which has their own Facebook reality show, “Ball in the Family.” His older brother, Lonzo Ball, plays for the Los Angeles Lakers and his younger brother, LaMelo Ball, is commuted to UCLA. Their father, LaVar Ball, started a sports company called Big Baller Brand and is selling $400 shoes.
The trip to China was a way to promote the PAC 12 conference in a country that possibly can provide students that want to study abroad.
