Track and field is not only about running but it is also about long jump, triple jump, and pole vaulting. USA track and field was founded by William Buckingham Curtis. It is about commitment, dedication and becoming better and better each time. Making it to State can be very difficult, not everyone has the ability like others do. Latashia Ironside, track and field coach at Hillgrove High School has done a significant job of dedication and hard work when coaching her students. Hillgrove won State for the four by one and triple jump.
Hillgrove track and field went to Berry College for State on May 2019. Students that attended State were physically and mentally prepared very well. Latashia Ironside, coach for track and field, gave them all so much of her support that a student decided to dedicate his trophy to her, her husband, and his mom. Isaiah McCray, senior at Hillgrove High School, states “I dedicated it to coach Ironside, both of them and my mom because the Ironsides are really like my other family, they are my school family basically cause I see them more than I see my mom and they just been through a lot, especially my mom, she goes to every meet.” Isaiah McCray participated in the four by one and triple jump, winning first place for both. Preparing for something big like this was easy for him since he was so dedicated to working so hard and pushing himself to be better than everyone else, but it was also very nerve racking. McCray explained, “Um cause I knew there was somebody better than me. Usually at the meets there’s not a lot of competition during the season but when I got to State it was way harder on me because I knew there was somebody who jumped better than me.” Overall, this was Isaiah’s first time going to State, so it was not perfect but he made it one to remember and hopes to be back at State better than ever because good enough is not enough.
Luckily Isaiah McCray was not the only one that could enjoy that first place victory. Andrew Worhty, junior at Hillgrove High School also got the chance as a Sophomore to compete in State and run the four by one. Andrew has been running since 7th grade and has been running for Hillgrove since freshman year. For it being his first time, he felt like he could have done more for his team. Andrew Worthy explains, “I feel like if I would have ran a little harder, that mental aspect if I ran a little harder I probably could have qualified for the 100 at State last year but I can always get it this year.” Throughout the whole trip the team created a stronger bond. Worthy stated, “We usually have a group prayer before the four by one and say a prayer and then go on and run.” Andrew hopes that he goes to state so he can run the four by one again and the one hundred meter dash and the two-hundred meter dash.
Track and field is a sport where commitment and hard work is needed. Practice makes perfect, so set your mind to bigger and better things. Remember in order to achieve anything in life, always think positive and have high standards.
