TikTok no longer being banned

As many people know, TikTok is a free social media app that lets you create, share, and
watch videos. Alex Zhu and Luyu Yang, the creators of this app launched TikTok in the United
States and within China in 2014. Alex and Luyu created the app for educational purposes and
they believed TikTok would become successful and popular. However, President Donald Trump
has wanted to ban this app for months due to security and privacy concerns. Yet, Trump has
signed a deal to partner up with Oracle Corporation and Walmart Inc. to become a U.S. -based
company.
India banned TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps a few months ago due to the threat of
sovereignty and integrity with China. Nyah Chambers, a Sophomore at Hillgrove High says, “I
understand the growing concern India had due to security concerns, because China is notorious
for taking people's information”. Nyah went on to explain, “To me as long as you are not putting
all your information out on the internet for people to see, it would not be a huge concern for
someone to delete the app”.
In many cases, TikTok is not a growing concern for some teens. 15-year old Kadija Islam
says, “I think it is not a big deal if the app went away or stayed because if it went away there is
always more apps”. In addition, she explained how teens take the app way too seriously and
there are many more important things other than stressing over TikTok. Many young Americans
can believe that TikTok is a great community with users who support and encourage each other.
However, people occasionally engage with others in a negative way that violates the community
guidelines on TikTok. “There is a lot of negativity, like even though there is a lot of positivity, a
lot of people hate on each other on there and there is a lot of body shaming which is not cool”,
says Kadijah. Despite the negativity on TikTok, Kadija enjoys making online friends from all
over the world and watching some of her favorite influencers.
Regardless of the rumors about TikTok deleting, 15 year old Sydney Bearden says, “I
know that people have been saying that the app will get banned for a while, like the news would
say TikTok is deleting and then all of a sudden nothing would ever happen”. Furthermore, she
continues to explain how relieved and excited she is about the app not getting deleted. “Trump
does not have to worry about security concerns, and we do not have to worry about the app
getting banned or other rumors regarding TikTok”, says Sydney. In many cases, most teens who
use the app are not aware or concerned about their personal information or privacy on TikTok. “I
don’t care because I don’t have anything important just because I do not post”. However, Sydney
continues to explain, “But some of the more popular creators and influencers should be
concerned about their personal accounts”.
Across the country young Americans are using the popular app TikTok, which has over
one million users. Teens love it, and it is the most controversial and beloved social network ever.
While TikTok is targeted among young teens, older generations have adapted to the environment
as well. If TikTok were to be deleted, it would not only harm famous influencers, although it
would most likely impact generations.
