Foreign language classes are a great way to enter a new experience. Here at Hillgrove, Spanish, French, and Latin are offered for students to take advantage of for their future. College benefits? Oh yeah, but there’s so much more to it than that. Mr. Joseph, the French teacher here at Hillgrove, says “when you learn about others, you have a different perspective of life and even your own situation, it opens your eyes that there are other worlds around you rather than just your own" meaning that learning another foreign language can change your perspective on not only yourself but the world around you. Mr. Joseph always enjoyed teaching others. "it's fun you get to teach some culture and you get to experience the diversity of the different students you have in class, just to teach them a language that isn't their own, it's fun and I enjoy it" (Mr. Joseph). It is encouraged to take a foreign language class to build relationships with other students and your teacher by bonding over a new language.
While there are three foreign language classes to choose from, Latin is the least common. Matthew Gresham, a sophomore at Hillgrove high school, is taking Latin two and enjoys it. "Learning Latin is okay, I don’t have any key tactics but it’s not that easy but it's not that hard. Ms. Hinton does a great job, she teaches well.” To add onto Hillgrove's world language department, adding Japanese or Chinese would be helpful to students who want to learn more about those cultures.
The most common foreign language taken here at Hillgrove, Spanish. Dayvon, who is a freshman here “I have family who speak Spanish and it’s a constant struggle trynna learn it to talk to them” Being that Spanish is a very common language, there are a ton of benefits to learning it. Dayvon says, “Spanish has taught me a whole lot, I can greet people and things of that nature it's been good. I wouldn’t be as intelligent without it; Spanish opens a new pathway of intelligence for me” While he believes that the world language department here is good, he states, “I would definitely put some European in there so there can be more diversity for different countries"
Learning a foreign language has many benefits that appeal to everyone. College is a good benefit, but there is so much more you can learn about yourself and others around you. There are so many cultures to be explored, and even more oppertunites to be discovered.
