The classic movie, Mary Poppins, was released in the year 1964. Now, 54 years later, the creators are making a sequel. The first sneak peek we got of the sequel was shown during the Oscars. The movie is supposed to release in the U.S. on December 25, 2018. The new cast includes Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Hamilton’s very own creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda. The story is supposed to start with Jane and Michael Banks, and their three children. From there they receive a visit from the mysterious and magical Mary Poppins.
The original movie came out five decades ago, so we all know that society has completely changed. The only way to find out if today’s society is interested, was to ask them for their opinions.
High school student, Grace Murphy, in regards to how they will make this movie appeal to this generation she said, “They’ll probably have really nice effects and keep the animation mixed with real life and maybe they will bring back a couple of the same iconic musical numbers that they had before.” Murphy also said, “They might [also] make it more fast paced and action filled because today’s society has a shorter attention span.”
Hillgrove student, Raechel Sigur, commented on how much the original meant to her: “The original movie was good. I think it’s a part of my childhood. I used to grow up watching all the Disney movies on cassette tapes. We would watch them at my grandma’s house.” Sigur also mentioned her opinion on why the release date is useless: “Unless they can relate to Christmas some kind of way, I think having the release date on Christmas is a little pointless.”
Both of the high school students said they would love to watch the upcoming sequel. This classic movie from the 60's is obviously doing its job at getting this generation’s audience interested. Mary Poppins has a way of bringing you into a magical world full of laughter and joy. On Christmas day, the movie theater will be full of original fans and newcomers, both ready to jump into the world of Mary Poppins.
