The Rave of Pinterest
By: Zoe Arters
For over 10 years now the social media app named Pinterest has held a strong hold on its users. While new social media platforms came and went, Pinterest has seemed to stick around. An estimated 443 million people use this app each month. The reason it is being able to stay around for so long is the distinctive features it displays that other apps do not have. Pinterest allows people to save pictures to boards to help organize homes, wardrobes, or even help plan future events. While doing all of that it also still acts as a social media. Allowing its users to connect with others by saving their pictures, following different accounts, commenting on posts, or even creating collaborative boards with each other.
Junior Zamoya Pettigrew says, “I use Pinterest every single day. It gives me something to do and it gives me more ideas daily” Whether it is using Pinterest for fun or organization people have plenty to do on the app. With apps like Instagram, Snapchat, or TikTok people can become exposed to potential harms of the amount of communication they are offered. Pinterest has a good healthy balance with the amount that can be shared with others and the amount people can do on their own without the expectations of other users. “With Pinterest there are no harmful stigmas and it levels everyone out” Zamoya adds. Pinterest does not provide that social hierarchy of putting certain types of people at the top that we might see on other social platforms.
Being able to post pictures or save them to boards can also inspire users for their creativity. Pinterest is a great creative outlet for people to share their art, gain more insight on modern designs and styles, or even stimulate inspiration for artistry. Junior Emma Sherrill expresses “It has shown me new and interesting art styles I have never seen before” With showing users new and profound ideas, this allows people to gain more insight for their creativity that they might not find on other platforms. An asset to a good outlet for expressiveness is being able to connect with others. So, while people can share with people on most social media, Pinterest allows users to not only share but do it more accessibly. There is no correspondence needed with a specific user to be permitted to see their work or boards. Emma agrees and says, “It gives much more opportunities to connect with others for creativity.”
With every good app comes its faults with the number of users it has monthly, most of the Pinterest demographic is women. Women make up 60% of Pinterest's overall users. Junior Zahir Portugal shares that “I’ve never downloaded it because it doesn’t not appeal to me and my interests.” Pinterest has its good features however it could be more interesting for all demographics. Allowing all diverse types of people to have some place on Pinterest would be more beneficial. Since knowing that a lot of other social media apps can be very divided when it comes to really anything.
Overall, the uproar of the app Pinterest is very well deserved. With the ability to save and create pins, communicate with other users, and inspire other creators truly makes it well rounded and differ from other social media apps. From its creation in 2010 to now Pinterest has become a household name and Pinterest does not plan to leave our minds anytime soon.
