The Month of March is the Month of Women

It’s the month of March and you know what that means...WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH! One out of the 12 months in a year is given to women and their history. Before women were given a whole month of celebration, we started with a day. This day was called “Women’s Day” and was celebrated on February 28, 1909 in honor of the garment workers’ strikes in New York when thousands of women marched for economic rights.
Women have went from only a day of recognition, to a week, and now we have a month. There are multiple organizations that are dedicated to honoring women’s history and there are events all around town that honor women’s history. Without women, the girls in Hillgrove High School would not even be students. Some of the female students of Hillgrove shared their thoughts on what Women’s History Month means to them.
Brooke Townsend said, “I think women have really changed the world, and they have a big impact. Although men play important roles in what the world is today, it couldn’t have gotten there without women.”
Townsend also commented on how she values Women’s History Month: “I know that billions of women before have done many things to help me be where I am today.”
Each year Women’s History Month has a theme to go along with it. This year in 2018, the theme is “Nevertheless, she persisted”. Another Hillgrove student, Maggie Peterson, spoke on her interpretation of this year’s theme: “To me it means, despite all the troubles and everything else you have to overcome, and the challenges you have to face with oppression, or anything really, ‘nevertheless she persisted’. She came through.”
Peterson also expressed why she thought women only started with a day of recognition: “Well I imagine it didn’t come about until women’s rights were enacted. It was probably having to deal with the fact that it was still a very patriarchal society and so [in turn] there wasn’t a whole month dedicated to women, just a day.”
Both students point out that without the women of the past and without the women of today we would all be in different positions. More and more women are using their voices to show that we too are helpful to everyone and everything. Women have contributed so much to society and what we know today, so go out and tell a woman how much you appreciate her. No matter if she is your mom or a woman in power who inspires you in someway, all women have helped shape the world as we know it.
