Binge- Watching affects people in many ways. Captivating tv series can easily lure us into hours of uninterrupted screen time. However, the consequence of binge- watching is more than just entertainment. One significant impact is the effect on sleep patterns. Highschool student Arynn Reeves says “Yes, I do notice changes in my sleep patterns when I binge watch." Binge watching has marathon viewing sessions that can last well into the night. The engagement with the show, mixed with the exposure to bright screens can disrupt your body’s natural sleep cycle.
Viewers often say, “Just one more episode.” This often leads into delayed bedtime and a want to watch the next episode. People who binge-watch may find themselves going to bed later and feel the side effects of not getting enough sleep during the day. High schooler Sophia Moore says, “I’ve noticed a decrease in energy levels throughout the day after binge- watching." J Clin author of “Binge- Viewing” says “Whether regular television viewing has much effect on sleep is debated. New viewing patterns, such as binge viewing, in which consumers watch an excessive amount of television in one sitting.” This can lead to many problems in the future.
Sleep deprivation negatively impacts many aspects of our lives. Such as food, functioning, mood regulation, and well-being. Lack of sleep can cause you to lose memory, not be concentrated, affect decision making abilities, and alter academic and professional performance abilities. This can cause a drop in grades and cause people to not get their work done. High schooler Siah Dennis says, “I feel less alert and have less energy to stay awake." This shows that binge- watching can wear you down throughout the day and make you lose energy that you need during the day. Overall, it can lead to high stress levels and a risk of mental health disorders.
