The highly anticipated movie of the summer, Barbie, staring Margo Robbie and Ryan Gosling making $574.2M in the box office has students buzzing. The very controversial movie has many moments in which students either love or hate. From Barbie versus Oppenheimer to the overwhelming use of pink throughout the movie every student has an opinion on this movie.
The Barbie Movie caused commotion amongst students with reviews of “I think it was overrated but it had a good message to women it had a very good message and impowering to women.” When Zoe Trushan a sophomore at Hillgrove brought up what she would change about the movie she stated, “I think the climax needs to come later I think it was very rushed in the beginning.” When the marketing was mentioned, Zoe exclaimed how the marketing changed her opinion befor she saw the movie “I was expecting it to be better it was bad I just expected to walk out bawling but I didn’t.” when specific advertisement was brought up “when the progressive commercial had Barbie in it” was the one Zoe Trushan specifically remembered. The movie was not the only to come out this summer, but it was exceedingly popular Zoe Trushan shared “I think it had more of a message behind it then other movies like they had messages but this one had one that’s more overlooked.” Though the messaging was not the only thing about this movie that was different, the set was unlike movies we have seen in the past. “I think it was a lot more fun and pink and a lot more kiddish, the way it’s supposed to be.” With Zoe adding more about how the set feels like a toy “look very plastics and bare like doll houses normally are and looked pink and Cheap in a good way.” During the movie Barbie travels to the real world and though the set looks believable the story line not so much with Zoe telling “It (Barbies real world) was very less women in control and like they weren't noticed as much and apricated as much.” Though back in Barbie Land when Ken took over, we were thrown for a loop “It became more chaotic when ken was there, and it was less pink and more horses and just less organized.” Zoe explained. As we step back from the movie and examine the timeline in the real world with the look of a sequel Zoe made mention “I probably would see it just to say I saw it but also to see how they would countinue it.”
Marketing expectations have skyrocketed since the Barbie movie has been put out as they put $150 million toward the marketing, and it paid off “The ads made me want to see it because it was very colorful, and all of my friends saw it.” Cameron Smiley explained though she said they do not always show the movie “A lot of people said I was going to cry, and I didn’t.” The attire did not disappoint with the pink, Cameron added “I wore all pink.” Cameron a sophomore at Hillgrove wondered if the movie was worth it “This movie was very overhyped like people were going crazy about this movie.” She had a different take on it explaining, “I didn’t really like it because it was fake.” When making this point that was what she wanted to change “Make it be more realistic I didn’t like how the beach was fake and you could see in the houses.” Even though a piece of this movie resonates with her especially one specific scene, “Whenever she goes to the real world the second time and stays there.” The message of the movie had a lot to say, “It’s to treat men and women the same.” Cameron mentions. The Barbie movie may have highly impacted this summer with Cameron’s idea of a lasting effect especially with little girls “I think they play with Barbie's different, and they thought prosses it messed up.” The Barbie movie is a great representation of right now but according to Cameron now is where it will stay, “I don’t think the movie will be relevant cause our idea of Barbie could change.”
The Barbie and Oppenheimer event has taken over as peoples have costume changes and are seeing both movies back-to-back. When Allie Reeves a junior at Hillgrove participated, she said “I did but I liked Oppenheimer way better.” But according to her Oppenheimer did not have much completion “I don’t think it really did because I thought the end was kind of patronizing and I didn’t really enjoy it.” The advertisement was great, but the movie was not on the same level with Allie saying, “no because I was really excited to see it and I thought it was kind of boring.” When Allie explained one of the key issues was the pacing stating, “It was fast paced but felt slow cause it was bland in certain spots.” Allie did state she was happy with certain parts as it was true to Barbie especially the I Can Do Anything moto “Yes they kind of had thing where each Barbie had their own job, but each ken couldn’t be whatever they wanted to be.” The age rating on the movie confused many but when came to who enjoyed it “the Millennials and Gen Z” was the group Allie expected to like the movie more but after seeing it her perspective changed “I thought it was really inclusive cause it had a lot of jokes with kids but maybe like little kids that don’t play with Barbie as much don’t understand it as much but I think it appeals to most generations.” With that Allie wanted to make it clear how long this movie would stay relevant “knowing our generation another week a then it’s going to switch to something else.” The movie was fun some people have started rewatching it and Allies comment on that, “Nope, because I thought it was kind of Bad.” The movie might have applied to some but not all.
The Barbie movie was one of the movies this summer that everyone had an outlook on wither that is good or bad. During this movie everyone was told different ideals of what Barbie is. Everyone learned something from Barbie even if it is not the best.
