The Forgotten Holiday

When people think or talk about holiday season, you would typically say Christmas, Easter, or Halloween, but what about Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving is an important holiday as well, and many people under rate it. Devan Lozier, a student at Hillgrove High School, said, “Thanksgiving is definitely not the first holiday I think about and I don’t really know much about it, but it is still important.”
Most people do not truly understand what you are even celebrating on Thanksgiving. Lindsay Bell, a sophomore at Hillgrove High School, said, “I don’t know much about it, but I know that it was a meal that the pilgrims had, and it represented their start in the new world.” Lindsay is correct because Thanksgiving is celebrated for the pilgrims. When they sailed from England trying to get to Virgina but ended up landing in Massachusetts, they needed help surviving and the Native Americans helped them with that. While the natives helped the pilgrims, there was a drought and when the drought had ended the natives and the pilgrims had a big feast to thank God for a good harvest.
Many people think that all the foods that were served at the first Thanksgiving is the typical food we eat at our meals now like turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie, but it was not exactly like that. There is no actual record of a turkey being the meat at the feast, it could have just as easily been duck, geese, or swan. Potatoes were not present at the first Thanksgiving meal at all because they were not a plant grown very much yet. Pumpkin pie was not made as it is today because during the first feast an oven was not even a thing yet. Instead, they made a pumpkin treat by hallowing out a pumpkin, filling it with milk, honey, and spices, and roasted over hot ashes to make the middle custard like.
When it is time for Thanksgiving most people see it as a time to go and spend time with family and friends. Galilee Barron, a student a Hillgrove High School, agreed by saying, “Every year for Thanksgiving my family has a giant reunion with uncles, aunts, cousins, and grandparents and we all just have big meals and tell stories with each other.” Just like Christmas, people have Thanksgiving traditions. Devan Lozier said, “My family traditions are to go to my grandparents' house and we all help cook and of course we have a turkey, but my grandpa goes out and kills the turkey and cooks it for all of us to eat.” Thanksgiving is an important holiday that allows you to reconnect and spend time with loved ones.
