Teenage Mind Study

A study done by Smithsonian.com stated,“A deficit in the development of the teenage brain has been blamed for teens’ behavior in recent years, but it may be time to lay the stereotype of the wild teenage brain to rest. Brain deficits don’t make teens do risky things; lack of experience and a drive to explore the world are the real factors” (2017). The teenage brain has many flaws because it is still developing and growing. In the teenage years is when many mistakes and decisions are made. Teens tend to not think about the future and their maturity changing but over the years the brain changes greatly.
While growing up, there are some few activities teens do that can really affect their brain. Ava Black says, “Video games and drugs because video games you just stare at a screen and you’re not learning and developing and drugs just mess with your body.” As humans grow, everything grows with them, but there are many common activities among teens that definitely can affect the growth of their bodies and minds. School can have a major effect on a teen’s brain. Dylan Blum said, “I feel like school makes brain stronger because they are learning, and it gives them tasks to do everyday, but also stress is not good for teens and their brains.” School is very beneficial in many ways for kids and growing up in general, but it can put a huge strain on young kids and teens whose brains are not prepared for that yet.
Maturity is another huge thing that happens when teens get older and change. Ava Black states, “I’m very mature with decisions I make and time management, but when it comes to knowing what's right and wrong sometimes, as a teenager with an underdeveloped brain it’s tough.” Over the years, the teenage experience has changed from generation to generation. The maturity of teenagers and their decision making has changed a lot. Tori Phelps states, “With the new technology and social media, it's easier to see your life and become more personal with people online. This allows a new window of judgement and immaturity of teenagers, and it’s very different to how it used to be.” Social media and technology can affect teen a lot by what people say. It is very different from past generations.
Many things can help grow and strengthen a teens brain while growing. However, teenagers and how they act and think has changed drastically over the generations, but how their brains work have not. There are continuing studies that show the changes of teen’s brains and why they act the way they do. All teenagers are different and the way they handle and process things will always be something to look into.
