Technology on children
By: Karen Garcia-Cano
Technology is the knowledge, skills, methods and techniques required to produce tools and equipment for people's needs. Almost none of us can imagine life without it. Teenagers and kids these days only want to be on technology. Technology has had many positive and negative effects on children. Kids these days believe that there is no other way of having fun without the internet.
Now a day’s technology is the only thing kids want to use to keep them distracted. Many studies have concluded that children’s physical, personal, and social development will suffer due to the excessive exposure to technology. Emily Giron, a sophomore at Hillgrove High School stated, “Technology is bad for children’s development because if kids use technology way too much then it can drain their weight, it could make them start being lazy and it can definitely affect their social skills.” As children use mobile devices more and more every day they are more apt to be virtually connected with family and friends, rather than physically spending time together. Therefore it can cause a child to be very less social in real life and then if something was to happen then they wouldn’t really know how to react because they wouldn’t have much of an experience in real life because they put all their attention on technology.
Technology however does have positive effects on children.. Over the years technology has become integrated into classrooms to enhance the learning experience for children but since the Covid-19 pandemic has started you may ask how technology affects children in a positive way when at home. Sophomore at Harrison High School Taylin Stallworth claims “If children or anyone need help and there is no other way, they can get it then they can use technology to contact people and teachers for help.” Technology now has improved a lot and without it we would have no lack of communication with anyone that is far. It would make it difficult for us students to communicate with our teachers. Therefore technology in this situation is a benefit for us to communicate with one another and be able to help each other out.
There are a lot of negative and positive effects of technology on children. The negative effects that technology may have on kids can include minimized social interaction, increased aggression, many health problems such as vision problems, neck pain, overstrain, etc. Some positive effects may be Mental skill development with educational contents, learning enhancement, problem solving skills, etc. We should keep in mind that technology is not a bad thing as long as we use it appropriately and we are not on it all day long.
