Covid-19 In the Flu Season
By Tavian Davis
One of deadliest viruses that has been around for a long time, is Influenza or the “Flu” virus. It is also a seasonal occurrence, that resurfaces come wintertime, resulting in many getting sick. With such interesting timing, many are curious how the flu will affect the current global pandemic, Covid-19. It is likely that Covid-19 will be worse in the winter since it is like the flu virus.
With Covid-19 still around, and flu season approaching, precautions should be made. Sydney Ma, a Student, says, “People should continue to wear a mask.” With many Cities and towns already implementing their own precautions due to covid, the flu may be contracted less this upcoming season. Social distancing and mask will not help to keep away covid, but may help stop the spread of the flu. Similar to Covid-19, the flu is spread through contact, and a large amount of contact between people is seen at schools. Schools will have to take specific measures during flu season to protect students from both Covid-19 and the flu. “I feel that schools will further enforce masks and other precautions,” Sydney says.
Unlike Covid-19, Influenza, or the flu virus, has a vaccine. This vaccine is mostly referred to as a flu shot. Many people around the world often get flu shots once a year around flu season. Lena Phea, a registered nurse, says, “I believe that vaccines are necessary and beneficial.” Although the vaccines are sometimes controversial, they are highly recommended by health officials. They are also required by schools. Schools this upcoming flu season will also have to start implementing their own precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the flu. “Schools should make every student bring hand sanitizer and other items,” Lena continues.
It is a common opinion that Covid-19 is worse in severity in comparison to the flu, but what about in terms of physical discomfort. Lanayah Davis, a student, says, “I would say the flu is worse in terms of discomfort, because when I had it, it felt like I was dying.” Some of Covid-19 symptoms include fever or chills, cough, difficulty breathing, and headaches. This is unlike the flu virus’ symptoms which consist of sore throat, stuffy nose, fatigue, and sometimes vomiting. One major attribute of the flu is that it is seasonal. This is unlike covid-19 which as people know, can be contracted year-round. Considering covid-19 was not labeled as a global pandemic until 2020 there is still much to know about the virus. “People haven’t adapted to it,” Lanayah says.
Many people hope that with the world’s current atmosphere, this year’s flu season will not be all that grim. With countries current safety measures due to covid the number of flu cases is expected to not amount to many. Of course, it must be considered that covid-19 may also get worse due to the seasonal change. As of right now many governments are continuing to enforce safety measures to keep covid cases at a minimum. Only time will tell what will happen regarding Covid-19 and a virus being found for it. However, the CDC and other health officials are strongly advising that people get their flu vaccinations to be prepared.
