College parties and covid-19
by Tavian davis
Fraternity parties are causing a cluster of covid cases. It is common at universities to have parties, the main problem is some students are still having these parties during current circumstances. With covid going around social distancing is highly advised. The CDC and other certified health officials are advising that people keep gatherings to a minimum.
One main precaution that could be made is, “not having parties'' says Sydney Ma, a College student. Due to the lack of social distancing, parties recently have resulted in hundreds of cases in only a short amount of time. Planning a college party right now is not ideal due to the pandemic It jeopardizes the health of all those who attend. Considering how dangerous it is to have these parties, colleges should implement punishments. Sydney continues saying, “Mandatory quarantine would be a valid punishment.”
The last thing needed right now would be more cases that is why social distancing is crucial right now. Tristan Vernet, a student, says, ” I feel like if people want to do it they will but it is not enforced enough.” With many people starting to slack more and more on regulations, covid-19 cases are increasing yet again. Tristan continues, “I feel like if people want to do it they will but it is not enforced enough.”
It has been almost 8 long months since quarantine started, and many are growing impatient and desperate for things to return to normal. This leads to some being more careless with their safety. Some states require citizens by law, to wear a mask. This somewhat will help in keeping away covid-19. Lanayah Davis, a college student, says, “I think that they don’t help fully but should be used.” Although masks’ effectiveness is sometimes called into question, they are still recommended by the CDC. People must do everything they can to keep the spread of the virus at a minimum.
There have been few scenarios where public figures or, “celebrities”, have been ignoring covid-19 regulations, similar to some college students at fraternity parties. There have been a couple of instances where these popular figures were held accountable for being inconsiderate regarding current circumstances. “I think it is irresponsible,” says Tristan Vernet. The act of hosting large gatherings at a time like this is being taken very seriously by police. “I would not have a gathering of more than 10 people”, says Lanayah Davis.
Many are very tired and eager to return to their normal lives. Although a definite time cannot be determined for the end of covid-19, many are optimistic in it being earlier on in the year 2021. As of right now the only thing people can do is listen to the proper health officials and follow the correct regulations. If everyone does this, covid-19 cases should surely decrease in the future. In the meantime it is best for those who are currently attending college to not host large parties.
