The Hillgrove High School Hydro Hawks Swim Team has many exceptional members and an outstanding record from past seasons. The Talon caught up with a few of the stand-out swimmers to find out more about what it is like to be on the team. Their years of experience ranged from eight to ten years.
Sophomore Kendall Cleveland began swimming because, “My best friend swam and she wanted me to do it with her.” Sophomore Mayson Harris started swimming because, “When I quit dance my parents gave me the choice between soccer, softball, and swim. Swimming seemed like the most fun option.” Sophomore Eliza Vogt decided to join swim because, “My mom didn’t want me in the house during summer.”
For Kendall, an average practice is “Usually an hour and fifteen minutes. Depending on the day we can do really hard practices, and morning practices usually aren’t as hard.” For Mayson, an average practice for the Hillgrove team is, “about an hour and fifteen minutes and we do a whole bunch of different drills and sets to practice, and year round practices are pretty similar except we do dryland and the practices are longer.” Eliza feels that the Hillgrove practices are hard.
Swimming can affect students school and academic work. Kendall said that, “When you have a lot of academic classes, honors and AP, during the semester we swim it can be kind of hard because you are tired when you get home from practice and you don’t really want to do your homework.” Mayson said that, “For a while swim was making it really difficult for me to go to all the practices, finish all my homework, and get a good amount of sleep but once I figured out a routine it got easier.” Eliza says that, “It makes me better at time management because I have to study, do homework, and get to bed early while also swimming.”
Kendall’s favorite memory with Hillgrove Swim is, “All of our meets. We are all really close and it’s fun when you get to cheer on some of your best friends.” Mayson’s favorite memory with this team is, “Probably taking over restaurants after meets and hanging out until they close.” Eliza’s favorite part about being on the team is going to the meets because they are “really fun.”
Kendall likes to swim because, “It always keeps me busy and gives me a reason to always keep improving myself.” Mayson enjoys swimming because, “I enjoy the act of swimming and I’ve met a lot of my friends and learned a lot about myself through swim.” Eliza likes swimming because, “It’s a good outlet and your team is like a family and you see them everyday and you help each other get better and they make practice fun.”
This team has grown very close since they spend majority of their time together at practices before and after school. They have a special bond made through this sport and enjoy hanging out with each other.
