Hillgrove High School is home to many sports. Most of them take place in the fall and spring. However, the Hillgrove Swim team takes place in the winter. It is a little surprising for swimming to take place in the winter.
Lately, the Hydro Hawks have been bringing up several state qualifiers, including, Cora Cahill, Eliza Voght, Elise Baron, Sarah Jane Eggers, Aliya Hansborogh, Daniel DeCarlo, and Ally Dykstra, to name a few.
A junior, Cora Cahill qualified in the 400 freestyle relay. She discussed, “Oh my gosh! We're all so excited, like cheering each other on. We're really excited.”
Sarah Jane Eggers, a sophomore, said, “I'm so excited. I had no idea that was going to happen when we saw the time. We were all just ecstatic. It was great.”
Swimming is a team sport where swimmers compete individually in events (races) or, as a team in relay races. The swimmers compete in four different strokes of swimming and it varies on how many laps swimmers must swim. The most popular stroke is called “freestyle.”
A freshman at Hillgrove, Aliya Hansborogh discussed that her favorite stroke is breaststroke. Hansborogh also explained, “Because I'm good at it and it's refreshing.”
Eggers explained, “I really like the 50 free and the 100 free.”
In order to win a swim meet, it is all based on how many points a swim team earns together, which makes it important for team mates to support each other. Hansborogh explained why her teammates cheer her on, “They’re are always on the sidelines cheering you on, yeah, and there's no voice left...It's really demoralizing to just stand there and wait. We’re like here, there for three hours and no one likes it if no ones with you and talking to you, then you're just like standing there. You do your race and you don't feel pumped up or like you don't wanna do anything super.”
Cahill explained what it is like at a swim meet, “They're really fun. it's just like the whole team gets together. We cheer for each other, we get to like just hang out and support each other throughout the meet and we meet up afterwards.”
Like many sports, swim brings an opportunity for students to show their talents. Eggers stated, “I love that it gives us an outlet like from the academics. It's a great way to just go and like I don't know, relax your mind and go and have some physical activity.”
The Hillgrove swim team is a great opportunity for students to be active and have a positive outlet.
