The 54th Super Bowl will take place on February 2nd, 2020 in Miami Florida this year. The halftime show will be performed by Jennifer Lopez and Shakira. The announcement was made on twitter by J. Lo, Shakira, and the sponsor of the halftime show, Pepsi.
Past Super Bowls have had successes, while others did not do so well. Alysha Watson says, “ Um, my favorite was definitely Beyonce because I mean she’s Beyonce.” Maya Cramer says, “Um, I don’t have a specific like halftime show I just like it when like all the performers show out, and it’s like really good and clean.” According to Syana Etienne the past Super Bowl shows were, “Wow… let’s take last year for example. Travis Scott, nobody expected it, but.. His was kinda bad. I’m not even going to lie his was kinda bad. The beginning was great [though].” Overall it is clear that there has been good and bad halftime performances in the past.
There are pretty high expectations for the halftime show this year. “Very high. Um, I expect a lot of dancers, a lot of choreography, like a lot a lot,” Etienne explains. She also wants “lights, fire, [and] music of course.” There has been controversy about why Jenifer Lopez and Shakira were chosen to do the Halftime show. “Umm, probably because, honestly because they’re probably dying out right now, and they’re not as popular so they’re trying to get popularity.” Cramer explains. Etienne thinks, “They’re great performers. They’re both latina, so you know they have a little flavor in there.” Cramer would like to see, “Um, a really strong and clean performance.” Many wonders are what songs are the artists going to perform. “Shakira, I listen to her. The only song I can think of right now is Hips Don’t Lie. Jennifer Lopez, I know the name. I probably heard her songs, but I can’t think of the [song] name right now,” Watson says. Cramer says almost the same, “Oh lordy I don’t know. I don’t know um, what’s the on- whats’s the one that Shakira um sings? It’s like the hips don- Hips Don’t Lie. Yea yea that’s the one I like.” Maybe many will not know the words to the songs, but the music might get them moving. “Shakira just makes me want to jump around and dance and move and just like sorta like do whatever you want.” Cramer says.
For future halftime shows there can always be improvements and obviously new artists to perform. “Next I would want to see the hmm, umm I would wanna see like the Migos. I feel like that would be a good show [because] they’re good at performing,” Watson says. Etienne says, “Well, Beyonce’s already done it, but I’d like her to do it again because she’s a queen.” Maybe Pepsi, the sponsor, should have thought about how other artists would feel about not being chosen to perform. Controversy rose because Florida natives were not chosen, like last year when the Super Bowl was in Atlanta, and natives were chosen to perform. Cramer says, “Yeah, I think that would have been cool and like [it] would’ve meant something to those Florida artists, but I guess it’s whatever.” Overall there are high expectations for the halftime show, especially with the controversy that has brewed.
