Every April, the world is given a gift: the start of summer movies. In this four month period, Hollywood produces some of the most critically-acclaimed and highest-grossing movies of the year. In 2017, though, it seems that Hollywood, much like its geographical location, had a drought. It went down as one of the lowest grossing years of this century, and it seems that critical standouts were mostly independent films, or ones released on Netflix or Amazon Prime. But that did not stop people from going to the movies this over the break. It’s time to look back on the good, the bad, and the ugly of the summer movie season.
It seems that Baby Driver had a solid reputation as ones of the best movies of the summer, along with Spider-Man: Homecoming and Atomic Blonde.
“I ended up really liking Baby Driver, even though I genuinely didn’t know if I was going to, just because I don’t really like action movies. But I thought that the music they picked for it and how it fit the car chases was really cool. It was very creative,” Avery Lario (12) gushes.
She also mentioned Baby Driver when speaking about original movies, or rather, lack thereof:
“Baby Driver was pretty good. It Comes At Night was okay. There really wasn’t a lot of original ones, a lot of them were inspired, but Baby Driver was the best of them… some of [the adaptations] were really good, like Atomic Blonde was awesome, and Spider-Man was awesome. I feel like if it’s still a really relevant idea, and people talk about it, then that’s okay.”
It seemed like a fairly successful movie for kids movies this summer, though, according to Messiah Rand (11).
“I don’t know how I feel about the Smurfs movie, but I really was pleasantly surprised by Despicable Me 3, and it’s one of my favorite franchises. I have to say, though, that I was disappointed with The Fate of the Furious.”
