It is well known that vending machines are the best source for a quick and affordable snack for most students in the facility. And while affordability and ease of use contribute to their rising popularity, vending machines still present the issue of nutritional value.
“It is mainly junk food and candy.”, Tealynn Swanson says. “The vending machines are not healthy at all, but I like the food.", Clifton Gordon also says. “Even though the students say the snacks and drinks are unhealthy, they will continue to buy them. Furthermore, if the vending machine snacks are replaced with healthier ones as they say, then the amount of people that will purchase them will decrease.” Irene Lin raises a good point. Because of this, it might be a good option to have at most half junk food and half less sugar and more healthy snacks, in order to let the students decide if they would like the junk food or healthy option.
How does having vending machines at Hillgrove improve our school? All the students I spoke to said the same thing, “It gives students a break to get more energy by eating a snack.” Elliott Auburn said how vending machines can also negatively affect our school, “lots of students leave class to go to the vending machines instead of learning” Vending machines also allow students who don’t have any food at home, get a snack or drink. “At least half the school goes to the vending machine.” Tealynn states. If at least half the school is going to the vending machines, the school gets money out of it, which goes to improving our school.
The sodas in these vending machines are diet. Do the drinks being diet or zero sugar make the vending machines healthier? “While they might be a little healthier, drinks with more electrolytes like powerade, is a better choice.”, Tealynn Swanson says. Although school vending machines can be a convenient source of food and beverages throughout the day, the items sold should be healthy options.
