Are the Stimulus Checks Finally On There Way? By: Kaya Wilson
The United States is ten months into this Covid-19 pandemic, and it has greatly impacted many citizens' financial lives. Many businesses have had to close temporarily and some have gone out of business for good. Millions of Americans are applying for unemployment benefits every day, in hopes that the government will provide money for those struggling to pay bills or provide food. A new stimulus package by Washington lawmakers was introduced that is worth $908 billion. This was aimed to appease both Democrats and Republicans. The Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was quick to deny this proposal. He would prefer that the package be limited to $500 billion instead. Another round of one time payment $1,200 stimulus checks have been rejected unfortunately since struggling families would receive them fast. However, they will be providing $300 per week as a part of the federal unemployment benefits. Americans are receiving less money than they did back in the summer when $600 was provided to jobless Americans. Meanwhile, millions of Americans struggle to put food on the table and are having to rely on food banks to receive nutrition.
Several People in America were relying on the stimulus checks to finally be sent out. Philip Swain who owned his own catering business prior to covid stated, “It is crazy because my business has been totally swept off the ground for now. People are not calling in orders anymore. I was hoping they would finally send money out to people who need it.” Swain has had to find new ways of making income during this pandemic. There has also been an increase in the need of food banks with staggering lines of families in need of food. Maria’ah Dillard who is a teacher in Fulton County stated, “It has definitely affected the community I am in, several children I teach their parents are skipping meals just so they can feed their kids.” There are also many children doing remote learning which puts extra costs on families struggling with bills. Roland Wilson who is a mechanical engineer stated, “They need to send the stimulus checks out now, this is ridiculous. People are falling into poverty while the rich get richer, why is there a delay?” Millions of Americans are struggling right now and many people believe the government needs to do its part and help their citizens.
The stimulus checks distributed to Americans in the beginning of the pandemic greatly helped out millions of people. There is still controversy between the Democrats and Republicans, the Democrats are pushing to continue the distribution of money to unemployed people. While the Republicans are wanting to develop their own plan for Americans. Either way this stimulus check decision is far from done. Americans are still aware if they will be guaranteed one in December.
