The cheerleaders on the Hillgrove competitive cheer team all took a trip to Columbus, Georgia for the state cheer competition. They left Thursday and did not compete until Saturday that weekend. Olivia Hicks who is a junior on the team explains how a team gets to state. She states, “We have regions first and you have to get top four in your region in order to make it to state. So, if you get first you don't have to compete in sectionals which is on Friday and then if you get any other place other than first then you compete at sectionals, and then the top eight teams at sectionals advance to day two which is state.”
Rachel Williams, a sophomore competitive cheerleader says that her team got twelfth place out of the eighteen places. She says that in order to make it better, “We could have been more focused out there. Everyone kind of just showed up and we all expected to hit but we didn't really have a good focus going on.” Olivia explains how she feels about the results and what they could change for next year. She states, “You know I`m not really happy about it, I think there were a lot of things that we could have changed, like working together as a team and our attitudes. But it is what it is, we can't change it, so hopefully we do better next year.” Further into the interview she goes on saying, “Next year we need to work on our attitudes first off, just when other teams win state consistently every year, our team starts to think “Oh we can't do that.” But I mean if we put it in our mind set that we can get first and that we can all work together, then we can actually get first.” Zoe Wagner is another cheerleader on the competition team for Hillgrove who also agrees that her team`s attitude could have been way better. Her advice for next year is, “We need to start off strong from the beginning next year and we can't let negative attitudes get the best of us.”
Rachel says that Lambert High School got first place. She adds, “They were in our division and got a perfect score.” She also says that, “We always have really good sportsmanship no matter what, when we didn't get called down to the floor, we still congratulated every single team, and we still made sure that we weren't being pouty about it. And even after we finished the routine and we knew we didn't do good, we still showed spirit and acted like we were still happy.”
Lastly, Zoe discusses what place she thought her team would get and Rachel also adds to where she thinks they will be next year. Zoe says, “I expected top five because I knew even though we were not the best we`ve been, we still had the talent to get us up there.” Rachel then adds, “Yes we will make it to state again next year and I think we will make the floor and make top 6.”
Overall, this team has had a great season and even though the state competition did not show their full potential, the seniors and the rest of the team are not leaving this season completely empty handed. The cheerleaders are now even more motivated to make next year count and win state like they had been planning for this season. Their hard work and dedication was not put to waste and will only be amplified as the new season begins next school year.
