Hillgrove High School seems to excel in not only academics but athletics as well. Divina Checo, a softball player at Hillgrove High School, agreed by saying, “Our sports reputation is pretty strong because we are basically good at every sport and last year at least nine of our spring sports teams won region.”
It is not easy to produce all these hard-working players that work together and make winning teams. One of the most important parts of creating a good team is the coaching and, according to Robyn Boyo, a soccer player at Hillgrove High School said, “Most of our coaching staff is very good and they produce and inspire some very good athletes and teams. Also, a lot of the athletes here are very dedicated and put in a lot of hard work by practicing everyday even on weekends.” Divina Checo mentioned that our sports teams were very successful because of the mentality that both the player and coaches bring to practices and games.
As a whole, the school helps support all the teams at Hillgrove and encourage all students to go and support them. Chichi Okoro, a soccer player at Hillgrove said, “Athletic Honors society and just the school in general support the teams because when a team makes playoffs, they treat the team to a playoff dinner, and Athletic Honors Society will give them candy bars, Gatorade for the bus for away games.” Although not every team at Hillgrove is supported very much. Robyn Boyo commented, “The more popular sports are supported at our school like football and basketball, but a lot of spring sports like soccer and tennis are less popular and don’t have as much student attention.”
Having these sports teams can also help the academic side of Hillgrove, Robyn Boyo stated, “Having students in sports does increase our academic achievements because if you play a sport you are required to pass your classes, so it pushes you to get good grades.” Chichi Okoro would agree because she said, “Not only are we viewed as an athletic school because more than twelve sports last year won region, we are also viewed as an academic school because we have one of the best, if not the best test scores in this area.” Hillgrove High School seems to be a very well-rounded school that pushes students to become not only better athletes but better students.
