Hoopcoming Spirit Week

Hillgrove High School’s Hoopcoming spirit week took place from January 22nd to January 25th. Leading up to the ultimate Hoopcoming on Friday, each day throughout the week consisted of a certain theme. Due to the three day weekend there were only four days of school that week, so the themes started on Tuesday. “Swinter”, a combination of summer and winter, was the first dress up theme. Wednesday was “sports jersey” day. “Dream team”, which was partnering up to dress like your favorite famous group, took place on Thursday. Then Friday’s dress up day was “white out”, the most participated theme throughout the week. Of course students are not nearly as excited during basketball season as they are for football season. Therefore, there tends to be lower participation from students when Hoopcoming comes around. Although it is still something to look forward to, the overall school spirit is just not alive like it is during football homecoming week.
When asked if he participated in spirit week, eleventh grade student, Logan Mossor responded with, “I choose to participate in dress up days because it’s something that I love to do! Brainstorming of how best to execute an idea; putting together an exciting costume the night before; the wide eyed and awe struck looks I get in the hallway! Dress up days, silly as they can be, give me something to work towards and look forward to!” Tenth grader, Alexis Mitchell simply stated, “Yes, I participated in ‘swinter’ and all white.” Nyima Gaye, who is an eleventh grader, honestly admitted, “I didn’t participate.”
Logan stated that his favorite dress up day was “dream team.” “The night before, I texted as many friends as I could to ask them to wear Hawaiian clothes with me! The next day, summer had come early for my friends and I; sunglasses, hats, flowers and all! ‘Dream team’ let us all band together to have fun, and that’s why I liked it best!” Friday’s theme, “white out”, was Alexis’s favorite dress up day. “All white was nice. I got to wear my vans. I felt like Daniel the meme.”
When asked about the low participation results, Logan answered, “Yes, not as many people participate in Hoopcoming as Homecoming. I think that advertising the dress up days in more creative, diverse, and eye-catching ways would bring more students on board! That said, even if just one student dressed up for spirit week, I believe that it would be well worth it because it brightened someone’s life!” Alexis felt that “it will be lower because it’s the same thing every year…” Even Nyima stated, “I don’t think Hoopcoming is very popular at our school and it hasn’t been for a while even though people still participated…”
Despite there being lower participation for Hoopcoming, it is still a great way to be supportive of the basketball season and show some type of love towards the big game day, court nominees and school spirit.
