Created by cartoonist Matt Groening, The Simpsons began in 1987 as a short cartoon on The Tracey Ullman Show, a variety program on the Fox Broadcasting Company. The show was controversial from its beginning and has made the news several times. The Simpsons is a show that has been around for many years. The show has 31 seasons and is still currently showing. Other than being a funny show, it is most known for its spot on predictions.
Nora Chioke states, “I know that they predicted Trump’s presidency, I know they predicted a lot of things, but that’s all I can remember right now.” 19 years ago, an episode of The Simpsons predicted that Donald Trump would one day become the U.S. president. The Simpsons also predicted Siegfried and Roy tiger attack, autocorrect, smartwatches, the Ebola outbreak, and many more. All The Simpsons predictions are years and sometimes decades before they come true.
Asmina Mama, a fan of the show states, “Honestly, I think it’s kinda scary how they know like years in advance. I don’t like that, like the fact that people can predict things that are going to happen in the future, like, because I feel like, I don’t know, like it is just so weird and creepy, like how in the world did they know?” To this day, fans and viewers of the show, still question how the writers know what will happen in the future. Some believe the writers are just very good guessers, others believe some type of witchcraft is involved.
Nancy, also a watcher of The Simpsons, states, “I watched it because so many other people like, um, said it was funny, like so many other people have liked it, and I would see like memes about it, like everywhere on social media and stuff so I was like okay let me just see what they’re talking about. So I just watched a couple episodes.” The Simpsons has always been a show which received many viewers, however most viewers came from the influence of social media. Worldwide viewers would post snips of the television show, which they believed was funny or that The Simpsons writers predicted, on social media platforms.
The Simpsons eventually became the longest-running American sitcom, the longest-running American animated program, and in 2009, it surpassed Gunsmoke as the longest-running American primetime, scripted television series. The Simpsons is set to come to an end in 2020 but, only time will tell.
