Netflix has released a movie called Sierra Burgess is a Loser. The movie stars known actors, Noah Centineo and Shannon Purser. It is about a nerd, Sierra, who is number is given to this boy, Jamey, by Veronica. Veronica is the “it” girl of the school and does not feel the need to associate with people like Sierra. Sierra begins to text Jamey and is so happy she has finally met a boy, even if he thinks she is someone else. Insecurities and low self-esteem hold Sierra back from telling Jamey the truth. Eventually, Veronica and Sierra form a bond when they find that they can benefit off of each other.
While the movie was a hit there are other opinions on it. When asked how the movie could be better, Ellie Flynn adds, “To make the movie better, when she [Sierra] back stabbed Veronica it was a big quick turnaround, and I feel like in real life it would take longer to work through that as friends.” While the movie is detailed and jam-packed with plot twists, its fast pace can make it seem more unrealistic. Also adding to the unrealistic subject, McKenzie Moreland states, “They could have maybe changed the party scene where they’re all getting drunk because I don’t think that happens in real life.”
On Rotten Tomatoes the movie has a 65% on the tomatometer. Ana Esteves and Ellie Flynn both rate the movie a ten and McKenzie rates it an eight. Ana says, “It’s not like your average romcom and it gives you vintage vibes while also being super relatable.” Ellie rates the movie a ten because, “It was a good movie, good music, good message, and the Sunflower song was so good.” At the end of the movie Sierra makes a song called “Sunflower” talking about her not being wanted because of how she looks.
The movie makes a point to show that there is more to a person than what is on the outside. While Sierra is not the prettiest person compared to the other girls, her intellect and mind attract Jamey to her even more as they begin to text. She shares her thoughts and her opinions openly to Jamey over text but in person she keeps to herself and hides from him. Ellie says that, “The message of the movie is, it’s not your outside appearance and like how well you come across physically, it’s more on how you are portrayed as a person on the inside”
The movie not only inspires people but also it squashes social class stereotypes. In the movie the nerdy, not so pretty girl, gets the really hot guy who happens to also be the quarterback for the football team. This is something that is not really thought of in normal high school life and is a large stereotype for kids in high school.
Overall, the movie shares life lessons, inspires its watchers, and spreads awareness regarding getting to know a person’s personality instead of judging them from their appearance.
