While schools provide rules on clothing, many students disagree claiming it isn’t fair. Worldwide, many students have argued against their school’s dress codes, some even went so far as protesting as well. Many say it’s reasonable, the other portion claims it’s sexist and isn’t fair. “They're reasonable sometimes, good for some things. However, a little strict.” Madison Johnson, a student attending Hillgrove High School stated. She added. “Schools should stop adding unnecessary rules though, where it's unreasonable.” “People get dress coded for the smallest and stupidest reasons.” Asia Gambrell added, another student attending Hillgrove High School.
While many can agree with her, others say differently. Another student claims there is nothing wrong with the rules, Micah Kelly claims, “Dress codes are there to keep a good reputation and to not look trashy in a professional space.” Another student, Asia Gambrell included “School would most likely be a mess if it weren't for dress codes, students would dress in whatever.” “Students are upset with the dress code for their benefit. They don’t want someone, or something controlling what they wear.” He finished.
While the debate carries on between both arguments, majority of students were found to claim dress codes expressed sexism. Dress codes apparently affected females more than it did to male students. Regarding the rules targeting girls, Ms. Johnson spoke, “Girls have more to show than guys, making the dress code having rules on female clothing.” On the topic, Micah explained, “The dress code mainly targets girls, and builds rules on female clothing mainly.”
Though it seems many students are against the rules, they tend to follow them. “Students do well, everyone seems to cover up a lot.” Asia described. Micah included, “Everybody follow it, but some people just don’t agree with it since they want to wear their own thing.” “Thankfully Hillgrove High School dress code isn't as strict as others, and it’s reasonable. Everybody has their own style.” He stated. “Dress codes are there to keep a good reputation and to not look un-presentable in a professional space.” Asia finished. Around Hillgrove High School, there’s a clear debate upon dress code rules for school.
