Salmon Are Dying and Cars Are the Reason Why
By: Ximena Arreguin Castillo
Salmon is a very popular type of seafood sold in a lot of restaurants. Nearly every year 284,000 metric tons of salmon are consumed by Americans; however, it might not be this way anymore if salmon continue dying. Every fall salmon (mostly Coho salmon) migrates to freshwater to reproduce. About 40%-90% of these fish unfortunately do not make alive and researchers have been trying to find the reason why for decades, only to find an ingredient used in tire rubber along with a toxic gas called “ozone” are deadly to Coho salmon.
An experiment done by researcher Edward Kolodziej and his team to find out exactly which chemical was responsible for this tragedy consisted of exposing several salmon to new/old tire contaminated water and as a result of this, the fish died within an hour of the experiment. “I wonder what it is that would happen if salmon were to go extinct,” says Yesenia Arreguin since she is one that tends to eat lots of salmon. Typically, if salmon were to go extinct this would bring a huge impact to our world, including the extinction of a lot of other animals that are associated with salmon in many ways.
“Is there a way to stop the salmon from getting intoxicated?” asks Jose Arreguin. This
problem has been going on for quite some time now and unfortunately the scientist has not yet
found a definite way to stop this. This problem affects all types of salmon and not just Coho
which is still pretty bad news since losing species of animals is always sad. Pacific and Atlantic
salmon both have been threatened by something used by humans which is why it is on us to help
the world be a better place and avoid car usage as much as possible.
Out of the many things that we can do to help this catastrophe is relying less on
cars because they are the leading cause of this issue since the more cars we use the worse this
the situation will get worse. Not only will the reduction of automobile usewill help this situation, but it will also help with the world and contamination issues that hold a huge threat to us. Some of the things you could use instead of cars can be bicycle or public transport, with your face mask to stay safe from Covid-19, and walking can be a great daily exercise.
