The Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints had a very important game on January 20, 2019. This game determined who would be going to the Super Bowl. Throughout the whole game it was okay, but during the last quarter is when it got pretty intense. One call made fans and coaches very upset.
During the fourth quarter with a little less than two minutes left on the clock for the game, Drew Brees the quarterback for the Saints throws a pass way down the field. While the Saints receiver is reaching for the ball a Rams defensive player hits him, knocking him down causing him to not be able to catch the ball. Many Saints fans say it should have been called as a pass interference which would have given them a big possibility of winning the game and advancing to the Super Bowl. Fans for both the Saints and Rams voice their opinions on the game.
When asked what she thought of the no penalty call, tenth grade student, Kathryn Wood responded with, “Okay so that was just ridiculous, and they should have called it! He was like right there, and they just like nope I did not see that, look a bird, and you got to be like actually watching man.” When asked what would she say to the referee if she could say one thing, Kathryn Wood asks, “Are you blind?” Many people agree both Saints and Rams fans, that the call was not fair, because the referee was right there at the play.
A lot of football fans since the game have been voicing their opinions on whether there should be a rematch or not. When 21 year old Austin Bivins was asked if there should be a rematch, he stated, “ No rematch, it's a football game, stuff happens.” When Kathryn Wood was asked her opinion on a rematch, she said, “A rematch would be very appropriate and fair”. Each person has their own opinion but it depends on how you liked the ending and who you are a fan of.
When 21 year old Clayton Clark was asked if he thought the Saints deserved to win, he stated, “I think they should have won, the call would have put them in position to win, they dominated the whole game and had the chances to win, but failed.” When Clayton was asked if he thinks the referee regrets his call, he responded with, “Uhh probably, he knows he missed it and now has to live with it. He’s human, he's not perfect.” The referee will probably continue to be criticized by both fans and coaches all around the world since he missed the call.
This game and no penalty call has caused an uproar in sports, because it was such an important game. One bad call caused a team to not advance to the Super Bowl, and has caused that referee a lot of criticism and pain in his job since that game.
