2020 XXL freshmen Rodarius Marcell Green aka Rod Wave is a popular artist in the new generation. His storytelling abilities about hardships with love have created sad songs that touch the hearts of millions around the world. He has dropped 4 studio albums (having 4 songs platinum and one going 2x platinum) with this most recent one “Beautiful Mind” placing no.1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. With the recent drop of his album, I took to the hallways of Hillgrove High School to see how people felt about him and the big news he released.
Rod wave has had a lot of success making music for people with broken hearts and knowing that almost 60% of high schoolers are dating makes them the perfect audience for his music. Senior Kennedy Hightower states that “his music really speaks to me, and it makes me cry when I listen. He always gets me through tough times, he makes the perfect sad music” And 11th grader Gavin Byers says, “I enjoy listening when I am in my feelings”. Knowing that Rod only makes sad music I wondered how his audience would react when they found out this would be his last sad album. According to XXL on June 13th , 2022 Rod took to his twitter (@rodwave) to say "On my baby’s dis my last sad ... album I’m off dat jus wanna live happy travel get dis money”. His “sad” albums arguably have made his career what it is today. Kennedy Hightower stated that “this is really depressing, and I don’t know how he will make good music without it being sad”.Larenzo Manuel, another student, says that “ I will no longer listen to him if his music is not sad”. Clearly a few of his fans are not excited about this new change in his music. On previous albums the reviews are better, Gavin Byers says “ his albums make me feel good and speak to the heart and talk about real experiences”. Rod wave is a popular artist with high schoolers his storytelling draws in attention, but his new style may not be a hit. Will you continue to listen
