On November 10th, 2017, Taylor Swift released her sixth album Reputation after months of single tracks and extreme anticipation. While the album has a mix of reviews, there are two main sides ( as there usually are for Taylor these days).
People either are in love with the album, or they hate it.
On one hand, some people are simply frustrated with the album itself. You can only read the entire thing on ITunes, and as far as YouTube and Spotify go, most of the songs are not able to be found. Which makes prospective buyers and fans angry. A sneaky financial move from Taylor, but is it worth it?
Meanwhile, many see this album as Swift’s final step into the Pop music world, leaving her country side behind. Or in her case, killing the “Old Taylor” as shown in most of her songs. The songs on this album revolve more around her come back, and giving an insight into who she wants to portray she is as a person now, and how the past is just that.
“I liked the old Taylor better” says Thomas Ashworth, “This album is making her more like other pop artists and less like herself, which is pretty blah, but the music is still pretty okay.”
The album includes the same general idea, writing about boys, even in her most independent stage she finds it easiest to write about a boy, whether she’s in a relationship or not. Judging by the lyrics, it sounds like she is. She is heavily rumored to be dated a British Actor named Joe Alwyn, but seeing how little press she utilized the months leading up to her album release, nothing is confirmed or denied.
On the other hand. people are raving about the new album, labeling it as “pure pop magic” (ABC News). People are in love with Taylor’s bad girl vibes and utter showing of her new found independence. The symbolism of shedding her past self and becoming the “New Taylor” that presents itself in the album is empowering to many, and people are excited to really get into the music she’s created with that new persona.
Overall, the album is a hit or miss, but in most cases a hit. Though it has its issues, there is a lot of potential and promise in this new Taylor Swift style. If she can decide to focus more on feeling that appearance, the reviews should go swimmingly.
