Eighteen years ago we were introduced to Mia Thermopolis, played by Anne Hathaway, a shy and awkward 15 year old girl in San Francisco who lived with her single mother and her cat just trying to get through high school as invisible as possible. Life throws her a curveball when her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, played by Julie Andrews, comes into town telling Mia she is a princess of the small country of Genovia. After freaking out she agrees to take princess lessons to prepare her for the decision of being a princess or being a regular high school student. Fourteen years ago we were reintroduced to Mia, now 21 years old, preparing to become queen! But the law states she has to be married to receive the throne. She is pushed into having an arranged marriage in a matter of 30 days! If she does not pursue this then Lord Nicholas Devereaux will get the throne. To try to make sure Nicholas becomes king his uncle, Viscount Mabrey, tells nicholas to pursue a Mia and mess up her arranged marriage. In the end, Mia becomes queen with no husband.
Rumors of a third movie have been floating around since 2016, but recently Anne Hathaway on Watch What Happens Live said, “There is a script for the third movie.... There is a script. I want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen. It’s just we don’t want to unless it’s perfect, because we love it just as much as you guys love it. It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it, so..."
Time will tell on this much anticipated movie, “Well Mia’s life first of all, her romantic relationship and stuff like that,” Amanda Wnek’s, a sophomore at hillgrove, opinion of what things we should catch up on with Mia’s life as queen. We left off with our newly crowned Genovian queen getting closer with Nicholas Devereaux, portrayed by Chris Pine, after they resolved the whole stealing the crown debacle. In the new movie, will we see him as the crowned king of Genovia or will he still be trying to win over our beloved queen?
More people are curious about when the movie will take place. Will we jump years into the future or will we back where we left off? In the beginning of the second movie we had a time jump of six years to Mia’s graduation. Fans wonder, will there be just a few years or the full 14? “I don't really mind either way it would be nice if they started where they left off since it has been a while.” says Nelson, sophomore. Most agree on the fact there should not be a major time jump between where we left off.
One thing we can definitely count on seeing is Mia’s quirky and awkward personality that, since the beginning, most teens were able to relate to. Amanda commented, “Somewhat yes, cause like her personality is very relatable but some of the things she goes through isn’t so I don't know.” That is true. We are not all real princesses that have to do great royal acts but we can all still relate to the awkward teen inside of Mia.
From the very first movie and the entire reason we have our new queen is because of Clarisse, everyone’s favorite grandma (besides there own of course). Last time we saw Clarisse she was marrying Joe and all our hearts melted when they were finally together, “Of course, they are the cutest couple!”, Callie said. “Absolutely, yea,” Amanda added. Our crowd favored couple did get married and it was amazing!
The princess diaries is a favorite series, books and movies included. Though each is different than the other, we love them both just as much and there is much anticipation for this move that everyone has said they will be first in line when it hits theaters (who knows when). Hopefully we will see everyone at the theaters enjoying this sequel very soon.
