It that's time of year again, when everyone seems to have a doctor's appointment on the same day and seniors slink away. Yes, it's pep rally day. Three times a year Hillgrove is graced with pep rallies, our first football game, Homecoming, and our spring pep rally, but not everyone seems to enjoy them. At Hillgrove pep rallies attendance always seems lower, and not for the right reasons. Many people say they are boring and lackluster and that there's nothing to do, other believe pep rallies inspire school spirit that helps to get us ready for game.
Josh, a sophomore does not even get off his phone during pep rally,” There boring, I mostly stay on my phone [during the pep rally]. But students believe our last pep rally surpasses all of our other ones. It all started with the routine performance of the cheerleaders and booing of the freshman. We then saw cross country runners and volleyball players run across the court. They were all followed by the show-stopping football team lead by class of 2018 seniors such as Chigozeim Okonkwo, Tucker Griffith, and Jalen Jackson. The football team was not the climax of this pep-rally though, This time it was the lip-sync battle.
There were two heats of lip sync battles; the first featuring the Math teachers who performed “Can’t Stop the Feeling” as performed in the movie Trolls. All of the math teacher wore X-large neon orange shirts while three of the teachers were donned with Troll hair. Instead of joining in the lip sync battle, Mrs. Sweet, the fourth math teacher concluded the performance by doing flips that rival cheerleaders. The second set of competitors in the first heat was Coach Spiegel and the Transition Academy performing World’s Greatest by R. Kelly. While the math teacher's’ performance was full of life and excitement, Coach Spiegel and the transition academy’s performance was full of love and free of judgement. Everyone wore a bright red shirt with the words, World’s Greatest Backup Dancers printed on it. Though the math teacher’s gave a lively performance, Coach Spiegel and the Transition Academy won over the audience with their heart warming performance.
The second heat began with the Social Studies teachers as competitors performing Carly Rae Jepsen's’ Call Me Maybe. Lead by Mr. Boisture, the social studies department had huge lyric cards to help psych the audience up for their performance, but the real show stopper was Mr. Sandford. Mr. Sandford did a mash-up of many popular teen songs including Bruno Mars, That’s What I Like. The winner of second heat was unanimously Mr. Sandford, as even the social studies teachers surrendered to Mr. Sandford zany and outlandish performance. The pep rally ended with classics such as tug of war, a relay race and a performance from the comp cheerleaders.
