On New Year's, Atlanta has a yearly tradition of dropping the peach at midnight. Many come out to watch it live in the Atlanta area or bordering states. There are live performances and fun activities that go on there. This year they decided to not continue because they do not own the underground anymore. They did not have enough time to plan for another space, so they decided to cancel. This has come as a shock to many that have been doing this with them for their 30 years.
Mekhi Coombs, a Hillgrove sophomore, believes, “They maybe have cancelled it because I feel like the weather the last year I went was very cold, and I think it's because all the sex trafficking going on with all the people there.” He states, “Yea I went a couple years ago, and it was a lot of fun and I would want to go back.” Karen Garcia-Cano, a Hillgrove freshman, states, “I don’t know because I don’t think it’s a very safe thing especially everyone being drunk.” Garcia-Cano believes, “Obviously the ball drop is going to be more fun in Times Square, because of more people and all the hype.” She says, “Probably the cold weather, and they weren't having a good enough turn out.” She wouldn’t want to go because, “I don’t like being in crowds of people like that and the cold weather.”
Reagan Tipton, a Hillgrove junior, states, “Because one, they don’t have enough participation, and they don’t own the underground anymore, so they need a new place to go.” She believes, “Yea I think it is they needed to plan earlier. They can't sling it two months before the peach drop.” Asking if it would prevent violence in Atlanta that night she says, “Absolutely not. I think that there will be violence no matter what.”
This is news to a lot of people; many know about the peach drop because they watch it side by side with Times Squares on their TVs. Atlanta has been doing this for forever it seems like, and it is sad that this year will be the first without it. Most believe it is the cold weather, but some people would come out no matter what. Every year people go as tradition, so now people may just stay inside and hang out with friends and family celebrating the new year.
