Each year Hillgrove puts on a numerous amount of plays that captures the audiences hearts. To start off the year Hillgrove presented a two-act play called “Our Place” that focused on showcasing different relationships and how they have a special place dedicated to them. With lots of emotions in the air the ending of the play produced a tear-jerking reaction from many in the crowd. The actors’ talents and hard work do not go unnoticed and it would be a disservice to not further dive into how this play came to be.
Since august it has been a journey to creating such a wonderful play. From the cast to the crew each person played a huge role. “I was nervous for the audience’s reaction to the play, but after our first show, the claps and praise filled the room and I knew the play was magic” shared Joema, a cast member of the play. It’s important to understand the creative process that goes into putting on a show for multiple crowds. So, when you finally see a play come to life it can sometimes leave you in awe and that’s exactly what “Our Place” did for many.
Looking behind the scenes is also important. Mr. S, Hillgrove’s theatre teacher, and his crew worked hard to build sets, correct lighting, and capture such a beautiful setting on stage. The sound effects and changes of scenery made it feel like you were watching real life unfold. “What was really good about this place is that there was only one place that held a different significance for multiple relationships. So, to be apart of the creative process while only having to build one set was really amazing.” Mr. S shared.
It is my hope that you are able to appreciate the art of the show so much more after taking a deeper look at what went into creating, performing, and sharing this show with the school. Ultimately, Hillgrove's plays continue to improve, and I am excited to see what else is to come.
