“On The Run” part two, the second leg of Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s On the Run tour, made a visit to Atlanta, Georgia over the weekend of August 25th and 26th. It took place at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium and started at 7:30 pm. The opening acts consisted of Chloe X Halle and DJ Khaled. Surprised guests included artists such as Ceelo Green, Jermaine Dupri, Ne-Yo and many more. Despite tickets costing at least $150 up to thousands of dollars, the city of Atlanta was eager to see the golden couple perform live.
Although Beyoncé is known for being one of the greatest performers in today’s generation, some people who attended the OTR II concert considered it to be more than just entertainment when watching her perform. Eleventh grade Hillgrove student, DeMaya Gaskin said, “women empowerment and feminism” is what Beyoncé symbolized to her, as a girl, when watching her perform. Latascia Taylor who’s as parent of a Hillgrove junior stated, “I appreciate the black power because it confirms that we are royalty,” when asked as an African-American how did watching Beyoncé perform make her feel. Kaiya Moore, an eleventh grade student at Hillgrove claimed that seeing Beyoncé is more than just entertaining to her because, “she’s a role model by continuing what she does, despite what people say about her.”
For the most part, pretty much anyone enjoys being at a concert, but of course there’s always those special moments no one ever forgets. Kaiya was VIP, therefore she had floor level seats, front and center of the stage. When asked what was the highlight of the show, she specifically recalled “when the stage started moving over us with smoke in tha air.” DeMaya on the other hand said some of her highlights of the show were, “when she sung ‘Resentment’ and when she did the slideshow with the twins.”
Despite Beyoncé representing more than just a figure for entertainment purposes, allowing people have fun and enjoy themselves is a unique capability of hers. “I was excited because it’s Beyoncé!”, exclaimed DeMaya when asked how did the concert make her feel. LaTascia said, “I was dancing, if I’m going to be there I might as well enjoy the moment.” when asked was she dancing and super hype or more chill and why. Unlike DeMaya and LaTascia, Kaiya’s thoughts on what Beyoncé symbolizes not all that serious. “Fun and good times because I always have fun when I see her.” was Kaiya’s response to what Beyoncé symbolizes to her.
As usual, Queen B and Jay-Z made an impression on the hearts of Atlanta residents. People of all races, genders and ages came out to unite while slaying with the queen. Feminism and black power exuded out of the songs and energy during the OTR II concert, highlight moments were lived and fun times were enjoyed. Most importantly, everlasting moments were created.
