The 91st Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, takes place this year at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. It will premiere on ABC network on Sunday, February 24th at 5:00 PM PST (8:00 PM EST). The nominations for the Oscars took place at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwin Theatre with Tracee Ellis Ross as the host. The top nominations for this year’s Oscars are A Star is Born with eight nominations, Black Panther with seven nominations, BlacKkKlansman with six nominations, and Bohemian Rhapsody along with Green Book with five nominations. People show interest in the Oscars for multiple different reasons. Some love the glorifying of different movies they have seen throughout the past year, while others may appreciate the diverse representation that is inclusive towards different audiences.
“I think that A Star is Born will win best picture. It’s incredibly well made and it brings a human face to celebrity culture.”, said Hillgrove sophomore, Darren Lang. Questioned on who she thought will win, Hillgrove junior Surrena Griggs stated, “For best picture - Black Panther because of the hype when it came out. Best animated feature - Spider Man or Incredibles 2. And ‘All the Stars’ because it’s a jam.” Hillgrove junior, Talisa Byrd said, “For best picture I think Black Panther will win, because of how different the movie is from others. It’s something no one has seen before.”
When asked if the Oscars helped contribute towards diversity, Darren’s response was, “Yes definitely! The oscars have been getting better at representing everyone and it’s vital to see a change like that.” Surrena admitted, “Yes because anyone can win an award and be celebrated the same. To make it more diverse though, they could maybe add a host whose not black.” “Yes, by acknowledging the movies, the actors and directors who put their own twist in their work and honestly just raising each other up and encouraging each other.”, stated Talisa.
Considering the Oscars can be labeled as a “bore” sometimes, improvement upon entertainment may be what some people think the Oscars need. “Nothing, actually” was Talisa’s response to what does she think could make the Oscars more appealing to some people.
As the Oscars approach, people wait to see if their favorite nominees will win. Over the years the Oscars have drastically changed when it comes to diversity. Not only are films and movies with more diverse characters being nominated more often, but directors and screenplay writers of color along with women are gaining the credit just as equally deserved. This has allowed for higher ratings, views, and inclusiveness overall pertaining to the Oscars.
