Billie Elish was 15 years old when she released her first song titled “Ocean Eyes” in 2015. She quickly became very famous soon after the song was released. Her surprisingly mature voice and lyrics amazed so many people, who soon became fans. Her songs touch on many topics that teens can relate to. Many of her newer songs are faster paced and are more like many mainstream pop songs, while her older songs are slower.
Billie Eilish writes many of her songs with the help of her brother. Her songs tend to include meanings behind them and sometimes have jokes tied in that many would never know were there. Charli Carder, a Hillgrove freshman , states, “Billie Eilish’s songs seem very personal to her like she is trying to tell a story almost.” Eilish likes to make her songs relatable to her fans. Many people say she is soon to be the most powerful woman in the music industry because of this quality she adds to her music.
She not only sings solos, she is also featured in many other songs with very famous singers. One of her most famous songs, “Lovely”, is a duet with Khalid. Many of her fans love the way her voice sounds with other artists, particularly other male artists. Emily Bond, a Hillgrove sophomore, stated, “I like the sound of her voice more with Khalid than I do when she sings alone.” This was one of her older songs that is very popular. Many say the song helped to boost her career and get her to where she is now.
Her new song “my strange addiction”, opens with a line from the TV show “The Office”, and features many lines from the show. The song got a lot of attention because of that. Not many other artists would be bold enough to do that. This is all part of her creative edge that makes her so different from every other pop artist. Also, her song “all the good girls go to hell” got a lot of attention because, she talks a lot about things in the Bible that no other artists would talk about let alone write a song about. Josie Dunlap, a sophomore at Hillgrove, stated “Billie Eilish’s song ‘all the good girls go to hell’, is very interesting to me to see how she takes stuff from the Bible and uses it in a song to make it funny and still not be insulting.”
The more famous Billie Eilish gets the more bold her lyrics get. She is beginning to speak her mind a lot more, and take a stand for what she believes. This is different from her older songs because she used to sing lower, and sing what she thought her fans would want her to. Now her songs say what she wants them to say. She is not scared to be exactly who she is. Even as she has gotten older her sense of style has become more out there just like with her songs. Her fans love that about her, and that she has the confidence in herself to pull it off. She has inspired so many young fans to be comfortable with themselves and be who they are.
