New Vaping Law

E-cigarettes have been available in the US since 2016, and are sometimes used as an aid to quit smoking traditional tobacco products. Vaping has been a horrible habit for teenagers. Instagram is promoting vape products to children as young as 13. Teens as young as 14 are becoming addicted to e-cigarettes and Juuls. There are flavored pods that taste like fruit and candy which might be the reason why teens like it so much. Serveral teenagers have been placed into medically induced comas. Around 3.6 million US school students used vaping products in 2018, which is an increase of 1.5 million from the year before. Trump wants to set a law where flavored pods are banned to stop addiction.
Most of the teens that vape start because of their friends. Peer pressure is a big factor on why teens vape. They do not want to seem uncool in front of their friends because they are not doing it so they end up doing it. Taryn Fry, sophomore at Hillgrove High School, states, “Peer pressure is definitely a large factor in why teens vape. It’s cool to your friends, do it, why not try it for pictures and videos and the tricks? It’s easier to sneak vaping.” Cristina Meireles, a freshman at Hillgrove High School, thinks the same: “Not exactly peer pressure, but people don’t want to look uncool by not participating.” Students are becoming so addicted that they even do it in the school bathrooms.
The flavors of these pods are what satisfies the people. The “buzz” after hitting the Juul or e-cigarette is the feeling they want to feel. This law is about banning the flavor pods, but Taryn Fry and Mia Smith, Hillgrove sophomores, believe that even with this law that people or teens will not stop smoking because of the addicting nicotine and the feeling of being buzzed. Taryn Fry says, “I think the law shouldn’t be put in place because there will still be nicotine products, and kids can get the rush and buzz without the flavor. They just need the juice used for vapes.” Mia Smith states, “No the law shouldn’t be put in place because it’s their health at the end of the day, and they know the risk of smoking.” No matter what law is put in place teens and people will still participate in smoking e-cigarettes and Juul because of the satisfaction.
E-cigarettes and Juuls are supposed to help people with addiction to regular cigarettes, but it does not. A pod of a Juul is the same amount of one pack of cigarettes, so electric vaping pens are not helpful at all. It is the same or even worse than a cigarette. Cristina Mireles, a freshman at Hillgrove High School, explains, “I think that was the intention, but now it’s worse than cigarettes. It’s become more of an addiction than a regular cigarette.” The best thing to do with nicotine addiction is to sell them to older people because they are more responsible and would not give it to a teen.
Overall , even if the law is put in place teens will not follow it . Just remember life is worth more than risking it by smoking an e-cigarette or Juul just to look cool in front of friends. Smoking can be additive, and once someone starts it is hard to stop . Do not try it for fun , it is something serious.
